RE: Diesel starting in Winter

If you want to start your engine during the cold, I always use the block heater. Far less stress on the engine with a few hour warm up prior to start. Just my 3 cents. The newer engines use a grid heater in the intake (NEVER use starting fluid in one!!). They reliably start down to below 0° without using the block heater. But using it doesn't hurt anything either, just increases your electrical usage.

RE: Diesel starting in Winter

I posed that exact same question to Cummins for an answer on another forum I run. Their answer was not to bother starting it UNLESS I was going to drive it at highway speeds for a min. of 30 miles. Don't start it and let it just sit and idle or even high idle, a diesel needs to be driven to heat it up enough to burn off the moisture inside the engine. So that's what I do.

RE: Banks system for 1997 Southwind

I have Thorley ceramic coated headers, a custom exhaust with a magnaflow muffler, and a TBI chips.com ecu chip all for around $1200-much cheaper than the Banks system.Have you tested it on a dyno to know that it's as good as a Banks SYSTEM? Very doubtful that your hodge-podge is working correctly unless you've run it on a dyno and had it tuned correctly. There was someone here some time ago that did what you did, ended up going through three muffles to show any gain. Plus, if you have a problem who do you turn to to get it taken care of. We've had Banks systems on two rigs so far, a '98 460 and now the ISC. Worth every penny we paid.

RE: Gas vs Diesel/ better gas mileage??

Ok, We have a beautiful 35 ft. fifth wheel and f350 diesel truck. I have been trying to convince my husband to get rid of both and buy a class a. He won't buy anything unless it's a diesel, but price is an issue too. What is the gas mileage of a 35 ft gas motor pulling a toad? Could be a class c also. We have a honda civic that we could pull behind it. Just trying to find out positives of gas motor vs. diesel if there are any. Thanks VickieWhat year Civic? Any Civic after 2004 is NOT towable according to Honda. But, you can tow anything you want if you're prepared to pay to get it set up right or pay to fix it when it fails. But since there are no transmission pumps for Honda's, its a matter of fixing it after it fails.

RE: Installing heat pump in older P30?

I think the Hunter thermostat will work. You can control both Furnace and A/C with it. Heat pump is A/C running backwards basically I think. Should work. Do a search for the Hunter, as there are threads here which deal with installing in a motorhome and controling the AC also. A heat pump is a heat pump, it can supply both heating and cooling, have had one in the stick house for over twenty years and on the last two MH's. They work best in moderate climates like we live in (Pacific NW). Can be used down to about 36° or so, then you need a furnace. On our MH it automatically switches over to the furnace. In the stick house it turned on the electric heating elements and got as expensive to run as an all electric furnace.

RE: Anyone towed a Town & Country mini van?

Friend did that, got a Remco pump, pump quit, alarm didn't work. Had a transmission rebuild, Remco refused to pay any of the cost, not even the new pump. No one in that club uses any Remco equipment now.

RE: Legal question: Is a search warrant required for RV entry?

And by the way, we have a Charter of Rights and Freedoms, that was written very recently, which seems to protect us quite well.I haven't seen a piece of paper yet that will stop a criminal. Criminal means someone who doesn't obey laws to begin with.

RE: Legal question: Is a search warrant required for RV entry?

There's no "yes" or "no" answer. If the officer has permission, there are no Fourth Amendment implications. If he doesn't have permission, he must have either a warrant or "reasonable suspicion" that a crime has been committed, is being committed or is going to be committed. The MH has wheels so the "automobile exception" to the Fourth Amendment applies. That simply means if he leaves to get a warrant, whatever evidence or fruits of the crime that may be contained in the vehicle will be gone when he returns. The officer can't use "gut feelings." He must be able to articulate in court what he did what he did. He can't assume that all MHs have weapons in them. The courts have also generally held that the smell of marijuana allows a warrantless search. The officer must be able to articulate how his "knowledge, training and experience" helped him to be able to determine that what he smelled was marijuana. A "hit" by a properly certified canine generally allows a warrantles search also. (In Europe, some countries use pigs for drug detection.) There are no black or white answers. The courts will look at the "totality of the circumstances" in making their determination as to whether the search was legitimate. Incidentally, before I retired, I taught search and seizure for 20 years. However, I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice. They wouldn't let me be a lawyer. My parents were married. (If you're a lawyer, that's a joke. Any resemblence to any lawyer, living or dead, is coincidental.)Here in WA they can stop and do a search WITHOUT a warrant if the stop was for a traffic offense, even RV's are included, it's for the officers "safety". It went to the State Supreme Court and was upheld there. So far no one has taken it to SCOTUS though.

RE: Impressed with CAT 3126 MPG...

Newmar tested the super single some years back. They never changed over to them. Most truckers around here still use the dualy configuration although I do see them on a few pups. Won't find the tires easily either. I will be changing my tires soon, and will have to buy new alum rims for the front (wrong width for the 305's that I need in front) and should replace the rear steel wheels with alum also. Last estimate was over $6,000 for all of it althogh the young lady doing the estimate had never done it before and priced out 6 alum wheels rather than 4 alum and 2 steel (for the inner duals). She just didn't know the inner duals were steel wheels.

RE: Would you buy this motorhome?

Low book value is $187,000. Let's say I could get it fixed up for $50,000, including a new engine for $15,000. If I can buy it for $50,000 I would have a good deal. I'm sure Spartan could repair the engine compartment stuff. Big question is whether the Travel Supreme stuff is available. New engine $15,000? I don't think you can get one rebuilt for that anymore, the trans alone is about that much now.

RE: Hydro Hot or Not?? ISL 400?

Other benefits: 1) uses diesel rather than propane, so you can heat much longer before before replenishing fuel. 2) has electric backup heater for mild heating or to keep the water hot. 3) provides free heat from engine while driving down the road. 1) Not all are diesel, they make propane units now too. 2) Our heat pumps do the same thing and we have an electric element in the WH. 3) Our engine coolant is piped through the water heater so we heve "free" hot water when on the move. Would I rather have Hydro Hot/Aqua Hot? YES, but in 2002, when we special ordered our 2002 DSDP Newmar refused to put it in, saying they didn't want to "dilute" the line by allowing MADP items in a DSDP! Would gladly have paid the $8000 or so as we already had about $40,000 in options anyway. But no go with Newmar.

RE: Registering MH to LLC or Corp?

In WA you have to list your WASHINGTON drivers license on the annual license payment stub. No WA license #, no tags for the coming year. Simple and effective for keeping tax cheats in line.

RE: rear lighting for 05 Pilot

Just got an 05 pilot and it looks like the best way is to go with diodes vs bulb/socket kits due to the lens being so clear as to look odd with an extra bulb sitting caddywampus in the housing..am I right?Good luck towing it four down! In '05 were were told by Honda directly that the '05 Pilot was NOT towable four down and that any owners manuals that said it was were printed and shipped in error.

RE: 2008 Towing guide

The writers of the towing guide only list vehicles that the manufacturer or the manufacturers owners manual states that it is tow-able 4 down. So if you don’t see a vehicle listed even though it is a 4X4 the manufacturer for their own reasons don’t say it is tow-able. Happy Thanksgiving Correct!!

RE: Need comments on Brakemaster system

Had it on the '97 Jeep, worked fine even on glare ice a few years ago. In fact, I used the toad as kind of a drag to keep the MH straight under braking. I also know for a fact that it WILL lock up the Jeeps brakes if I dynamite the MH brakes.

RE: Elecrrical hookup

for all you guys calling it 220/110 you ought to get an electrician cause it's 240/120 there is no voltage as 220/110 Just to confuse the issue... it all depends on how you measure voltage... RMS, True-RMS or peak? Then what if someone decides to cheat and give you a leg off 3 phase and provides 208? And we're just getting started on all the voltages that are regularly used... :? :B OK, lets throw a phase angle or two in! I was at a park in OR (Indian Casino owned), they advertised it as "50 amp service". One leg had a 30 amp breaker and the other a 20!! Worked OK but I'm glad I didn't need both heat pumps!.

RE: Water Intrusion Problem

Well. Sealtech is fairly good at finding leaks.. They seal your rig's vents and blow in air, wash it with dish soap and look for the bubbles.. Same as a dunk test on a tire but lower pressure. If the wet spot had been on the other side I'd have a clue, but not on the driver's side.. Driver's side leaks are usually windows. or the door seal. Why would it be different on the drivers side than the passenger especially on a Type C MH?
